The truth about social media is, it is designed for speed of scroll, not depth.
This is what I began understanding last fall.
The platform I had faithfully built my business, met my clients, and served my audience had become what seemed like a dried up brook.
Also, what the Lord was showing me in my walk with Him felt too sacred to share on social where people would just rush on past.
It felt like I would be throwing my pearls to swine so I, like Mary, kept these special things the Lord was showing me close to my heart.
He asked me to get off social for a month.
I thought that was impossible and gently reminded God that that was my bread and butter.
My clients were coming from there.
The instruction was clear...so I stopped engaging altogether.
The more time that I was off of social and the more I pressed into the Lord, I sensed He had something new for me.
One month turned into two. Then three. Then four, Then five.
And by then I had absolutely no desire to go back.
My nervous system was in a much better place, and the Lord was providing clients for my courses and coaching through my email list and 1:1 reach outs.
Enter Substack.
I had been exploring the platform as I had subscribed to a fellow entrepreneur's publication.
When I signed up it suggested other publications I might enjoy so I subscribed.
Over the time I was off social media, I began diving into these publications and loved them!
In early April 2026, I made the leap and began to try and set up my own publication on the platform.
That's when I hit a snag...
Even though I love tech and have taught tech to many other entrepreneurs over the years, this platform had me scratching my head.
It wasn't intuitive. At all.
I reached out to a friend whose brother had been building his coaching business for the past 6 months with success on the platform. She suggested I chat with him.
On our Zoom call I shared about a Substack training I was considering that was going to be $300.
I really didn't want to spend more money so I asked his advice.
I said, "Knowing what you know now with this platform would you suggest I hire a coach to get help getting things set up?"
He replied without hesitation, "Yes definitely. Don't mess around with it. Get it set up properly. Pay the money."
Crud. Not what I wanted to hear.
I paid the money, went to the training, and I learned a lot.
The problem with the training was there was a lot of typical "bro marketing" language (driving sales, driving traffic, etc) and what I felt to be a hustle and grind mindset.
I left that scene long ago and will not enter into that again.
Whatever I build here I will build intentionally as I abide in Christ. No striving required.
I will not rush or push or press.
I will operate at the pace of grace, follow the Spirit's leading and build my business here with intentionality and with JOY!
He brings the increase and HE gets the glory!
This is what I'm seeing the choice before each of us as business owners is:
Fight non-stop distraction (social media) or draw your clients to you through depth (Substack).
